Pietracatella

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,433 · Postal code: 86040

The town was born from the union of two hamlets: Petra, where it stands now, and Catella, a little way off. After the earthquake of 1456 the people of Catella moved to Petra, and for a while the place was called Predicatiello, from Petra et Catella.

It sits on top of a tufa spur the locals call the Morgia, at 725 metres, above the Tappino valley. On the Morgia the church of San Giacomo is built half on the rock and half over the eleventh-century crypt of Santa Margherita. The feast of the Madonna of Constantinople, on the first Tuesday after Pentecost, is known here as the Madonna of the ricotta. There are 1,433 residents.
