Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Monacilioni, a municipality of 553 inhabitants in the province of Campobasso, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
The landslide of 1961 took away half the village. Corso Umberto I still marks the border: on one side the lived-in houses, on the other what people here call case spallate, the ruins of the old centre, with the old church reduced to a piece of façade and its entrance steps. The new church, built in 1958, is rationalist and stands on safer ground.
The name comes from Castro Monachi Leonis, a chapel dedicated to a Benedictine saint, and the coat of arms turns it into a pun: a monk holding a rampant lion by its paws. The village, 553 residents, looks down over the Tappino valley.
