Carlantino

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 1,040 · Postal code: 71030

Carlantino is a village founded on purpose, and we know why. The baron of Celenza Valfortore asked the viceroy of Naples for leave to build a new settlement in the middle of his lands, more than four miles from the village: his tenants were robbed continually, and by the time the guards arrived the thieves had already vanished into the woods. The permission came in 1582, and the new hamlet took the baron's name. In 1595, at the first count, the families were ten.

In 1613 the founder's son had an inscription carved on the gate beside the church, recording who had given the village its name; the gate was later demolished. At the feast of San Donato, on 7 August, the village enjoyed eight days of franchise: in that period civil and criminal cases were judged by the local government. Below the village lies today the lake of Occhito, one of the largest artificial reservoirs in Europe.
