Feast of San Gregorio Papa
📅 Every year, on 19 August
On 19 August Pietracupa, a municipality of 228 inhabitants in the province of Campobasso, celebrates its patron San Gregorio Papa (Pope Saint Gregory).
The village leans against a huge limestone outcrop, the Morgia, riddled with caves: hence the name, pietra plus cupa, which in Latin means cask and refers to those very hollows. Inside the Morgia is a rock-cut church, brought back into use last century: it keeps a sixteenth-century crucifix and an altar made from the millstone of an old mill.
In 1360 the local lord Roberto di Pietracupa had the Gothic church of San Gregorio built, and the name of the master mason, Riccardo di Siomone, is still on an inscription behind it. Two abbeys did not survive: earthquakes in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries brought them down. The village now has 228 residents.
