Bagnoli del Trigno

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 772 · Postal code: 86091

The church of San Silvestro is wedged inside the mountain: of the building you see only the side walls, the Gothic doorway and the bell tower with its little onion dome in coloured majolica. The rest is rock. It has been there since the thirteenth century, above the houses.

Higher still, at 783 metres, stands the Sanfelice castle, which watched over the drove road to Lucera. The village's name would come from balneoli, little baths: everything is said to have started around a hot spring. Between 25 October and 5 November 1943 Bagnoli was caught in the battle of the Trigno, and civilians lost their lives too. Today there are 772 residents.

Saint Vitalis and the midsummer calendar

📅 Every year, on 20 August

On 20 August Bagnoli del Trigno celebrates Saint Vitalis of Rome, in a month that, between Saint Catherine, «la firia» and Saint Anthony, has hardly a day without a feast.
