Fossalto

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,480 · Postal code: 86020

Fossalto was born from two separate villages, Fossaceca and Castelluccio, which depended on Limosano and which at some point found themselves a single town.

The walls and towers that closed it were pulled down in the eighteenth century, when the fief belonged to the Di Capua and then the Mascione. The Ciarlitto tower remains, fourteenth-century and round, which defended the baronial palace: it carries a votive niche to Saint Nicholas. In the church of Sant'Antonio di Padova, baroque and single-naved, there is a painting of the saint dated 1660; the bell tower beside it is of 1866. There are 1,480 residents.

Saint Nicholas, patron of a village once ringed by towers and walls

📅 Every year, on 9 May

Fossalto celebrates Saint Nicholas on 9 May, also recalled in the town by a votive aedicule; the town centre was once fortified with towers and walls, dismantled in the 18th century, when the fief belonged to the Di Capua and Mascione families.
