San Giovanni in Galdo

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 624 · Postal code: 86010

In the mid-fifteenth century a landslide split this village in two and swallowed part of it. The quarter left standing is still called Morrutto, from muro rotto, broken wall, and it is the oldest part: lanes coiling round a sandstone crag, stretches of wall built into the houses, traces of the old gates.

Just outside, on Colle Rimontato at 709 metres, lie the foundations of a Samnite temple from the second century BC, dug up between 1974 and 1976: a podium with four Doric columns, a portico around it, eight hundred square metres built for a community as small as today's, 624 residents.

Saint John the Baptist, patron of a town grown over a Samnite sanctuary

📅 Every year, on 29 August

San Giovanni in Galdo celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 29 August; the ancient village grew up around his church, whose perimeter walls are partly incorporated into the town hall, while on Colle Rimontato a small Italic sanctuary already stood in the 2nd century BC.
