Feast of San Mercurio
📅 Every year, on 26 August
On 26 August Toro, a municipality of 1,450 inhabitants in the province of Campobasso, celebrates its patron San Mercurio, with pilgrims visiting the church dedicated to the saint.
In the summer of 1985 people began going up to the little church of San Rocco: in a niche, through a play of light and shadow, they believed they could make out the face of Christ. Pilgrims came from outside as well.
The font of the church of the Santissimo Salvatore is made from a Roman funerary slab of the third century, its inscription still legible. In the convent of Santa Maria di Loreto cardinal Orsini, the future Benedict XIII, had his favourite room: in 1726 the nineteen lunettes of the cloister were frescoed in his honour. The plague of 1656 killed four hundred out of a thousand; the earthquake of 1805 brought the town down. There are 1,450 residents.
