Campolieto

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 938 · Postal code: 86040

Nobody knows where the name comes from: some pull it from campus leti, the field of death, and some from campus laetus, the field of joy. In 1584 the fief was sold to the Carafa and the people tried to stop it — they wanted to pass to the state demesne, not to another lord — but the Regia Camera della Sommaria threw the objection out.

To make up for it, Eleonora and Carlo Carafa opened two hospitals for the poor: the streets are still called via Spedale and via Spedale Vecchio. The village, 938 residents, grew around the feudal palace, and the old centre is the one from then: narrow alleys and deep lanes.
