Campodipietra

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 2,567 · Postal code: 86010

The name comes from a stone: a Roman funerary slab with the carved portraits of a married couple, which gave its name to the village born after the fall of the empire, Campus de petra. The slab is now walled into the church of San Bonaventura.

In 1022 the emperor Henry II stopped here: the abbot of San Vincenzo al Volturno came to him over a lawsuit, and from that meeting comes the first written mention of the town. In 1705 the inhabitants gathered in that same San Bonaventura to vote for their patron: the run-off was between Bernardine of Siena and Martin, and Martin won. The 2,567 residents live on a bank of sandstone sheer above a gully.
