Acquaviva d'Isernia

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 455 · Postal code: 86080

On the evening of 21 January, the eve of St Anastasius, Acquaviva lights the Focata: a bonfire fed with juniper cut in the surrounding hills, which every year brings emigrants back to the village from other regions and from abroad. In August what gets celebrated is a cake, the scurpella, bread dough and sugar.

The village, 455 residents, sits in the Volturno basin among oaks and hornbeams, with the Mainarde range in front and Roccaraso and Rivisondoli not far beyond. It belonged to the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, then to Montecassino, and became a comune in its own right only in 1820: before that it was one with Rionero Sannitico.
