Castel San Vincenzo

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 545 · Postal code: 86071

The comune has existed since 1928, when two villages, Castellone al Volturno and San Vincenzo al Volturno, were merged into one. The seam still shows: two main squares, two churches, two war memorials, one for each. Below, the reservoir dug in the late 1950s for hydroelectric power has settled into the landscape so well it looks natural.

The territory holds the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, founded by three Lombard nobles and within decades one of the richest in Europe, until in 881 an Arab-Berber raiding party sacked it: the surviving monks came back only after 914. Since 1990 the 545 residents have lived inside the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise national park.
