Cerro al Volturno

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 1,341 · Postal code: 86072

On 22 September 1980 the Italian post office printed a 200-lire stamp with the castle of Cerro, in the Castles of Italy series. It had begun around the year 1000 as a simple enclosure on top of the mountain, somewhere to keep supplies safe; then, towards 1400, Federico Pandone built on it the castle that gave it his name and its shape.

The village is far older: in 899 the abbot Roffredo of San Vincenzo al Volturno brought a colony of farmers here, and the name came from the turkey oaks that covered the place. Today a little stepped lane climbs from the village, 1,341 residents, up to the castle, which inside has become a hotel.
