Forlì del Sannio

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 735 · Postal code: 86084

At Canonica there are still stretches of cyclopean walls, the blocks the Samnites fitted together without mortar. Today's village came later, and for centuries it was not Molise at all: it belonged to Abruzzo Ultra, the district of Sulmona, and passed to the county of Molise only at the start of the nineteenth century.

The name has always been the same: Foruli, Forolo, Foroli, then Forlì, with the del Sannio coming much later. The village, 735 residents, sits among woods between 370 and 1,130 metres; the Vandrella torrent runs through it, and in via Tolfo the houses are still all of stone.
