Fornelli

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 1,925 · Postal code: 86070

In June 1814 the townspeople bought the bell-tower clock themselves, so that it would strike the hours and the quarters. The 1984 earthquake broke it for good; in the 2000s a new one arrived, computerised, paid for by people from Fornelli who had emigrated to the United States.

The town is first named in a ruling of 10 October 981, but it existed before then: it was probably a dependency of the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, and the name is thought to come from a kiln for bricks. From 1433 to 1525 it belonged to the Pandone. At Fornelli, in 1909, Annunziata Lombardi was born, the mother of Nancy Pelosi. The 1,925 residents make oil.
