Feast of Saint Bartholomew
📅 Every year, on 25 August
On 25 August Bojano celebrates Saint Bartholomew the apostle, in the co-cathedral whose crypt holds a Norman apse built over a spring.
Legend says the young Sabines who set out for the ver sacrum followed an ox, the animal sacred to Mamers: it stopped to drink at the springs of the Biferno, and there they founded Bovaianum. The name comes from the ox.
Bojano was the capital of the Pentri. Around 662 a group of Bulgars settled here, fleeing the Avars, and Paul the Deacon, a century later, wrote that they still spoke their own language. In the eleventh century the Norman Raoul de Moulins made it the capital of his county: from that name, they say, comes the name of Molise. The earthquake of 1805 flattened the town; the 7,946 residents live at the foot of the Matese.
