Scapoli

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 758 · Postal code: 86070

Scapoli is the village of the zampogna: the bagpipes are still made by hand here, and since 1975 the last weekend of July brings people from half of Europe for the festival. There are two bagpipe museums, and an old quarrel runs between them: one shows reproductions, the other, kept by the master craftsmen, real instruments, some of them from Scotland, Romania and Turkey.

The village, 758 residents, was founded by the monks of San Vincenzo al Volturno who had fled the Saracens: in the Chronicon Vulturnense it is the Castrum Scappili. During the war Scapoli found itself on the Gustav line, and it was here that the Italian Liberation Corps was formed, which fought on nearby Monte Marrone.
