Colli a Volturno

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 1,382 · Postal code: 86073

In July 972 the abbot of San Vincenzo al Volturno signed a contract with some twenty settlers, three Alamanni and the rest from Penne, who were to clear this land and build a castle on it.

Each year they paid the abbey a measure of wheat and one of barley for every house, wine for every vineyard, and one pig in every eleven. The castrum was dedicated to Sant'Angelo, that is to Saint Michael, who for the Lombards protected strongholds and warriors. Of the walls three of the four gates remain, and an Angevin tower. On Monte San Paolo runs a Samnite wall six kilometres long. There are 1,382 residents.
