Feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer
📅 Every year, on 5 August
On 5 August Pietrabbondante celebrates Saint Vincent Ferrer, in the village that stands above the Samnite sanctuary, with its theatre of stone seats shaped to the back.
The village, 826 residents, was built with stones from the Samnite sanctuary that lies below it: in the wall of the church of Santa Maria Assunta there are still fragments of tablets written in Oscan. The sanctuary, at the foot of Monte Saraceno, with its theatre and temple in polygonal blocks, was the religious and political centre of the Samnites until 95 BC.
Up at a thousand metres, the houses sit among three huge boulders, the Morge, and it is they that appear on the village's arms: a rebus of rocks, wheat ears and water which, solved, reads Pietrabbondante. Of the convent of Sant'Eustachio, given to Montecassino in 977, there remain a stretch of wall three and a half metres high and the name of the district.
