Montaquila

Of the round towers that closed the town three remain. One is still whole, with its window and battlements on top; another has become the private chapel of a family, the Rossi.

Not far off lies Roccaravindola, a medieval village perched on a rocky hill: the castle was built around 1074 by count Ugone of Venafro, who had the fief from abbot Desiderius of Montecassino. The walls remain, two towers and the Porta Vecchia; the houses lean on one another all along the ridge, and since the 1960s they have emptied. The parish church, rebuilt in 1888, has a Greek temple front. The 2,451 residents look out over the Volturno valley.

Saint Roch, patron of a town whose church was rebuilt twice

📅 Every year, on 16 August

Montaquila celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August; the town's main church, Santa Maria Assunta, damaged by the 1805 earthquake and later demolished after poorly executed restorations, was entirely rebuilt in 1888.
