Venafro

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 11,236 · Postal code: 86079

Venafro is the gateway to Molise, but it has only belonged to the region since 1863: before that it was in Terra di Lavoro, that is in Campania, and the local speech still remembers it.

Augustus made it the colony of Augusta Julia Venafrum and gave it an aqueduct, the Rivus Venafranus, which carried the water of the Volturno here from Rocchetta; the Roman layout, with cardo and decumanus, can still be read in the streets. The medieval town lies higher up, climbing the mountain, with the Pandone castle at the top and the cathedral outside the walls. The 11,236 residents live in the plain where the Volturno and the San Bartolomeo rise, beside the French military cemetery.
