At the end of the eighteenth century, at Triverno, an inscribed slab of 26 BC came to light: they call it the Tavola acquaria, and it sets out the rules for maintaining the Venafro aqueduct and sharing out its water, laid down under Augustus.

Of that aqueduct, pieces survive scattered about, below Santa Maria Oliveto and near the old church. Santa Maria Oliveto is the comune's medieval village: it was founded in 839 by settlers from the Sulmona area, placed there by the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, and its walls still have thirteen towers. Until 1810 Pozzilli was a hamlet of Venafro; the 2,275 residents live in the Volturno valley.
