Macchia d'Isernia

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 979 · Postal code: 86070

Just outside Isernia there was a district of taverns for travellers, and it is still called Taverne. Of one of those innkeepers a carved stone survives, now in Paris: he had the bill he presented to his customers cut into it, and along with board and lodging it includes the girl. The village's name comes from maccla, the wood, and from serra, the rock it stands on.

The castle of the D'Alena barons, with its Renaissance loggia of five arches, is said to have been built around 1100 by Clementina, daughter of Roger II of Sicily. Since 2006 the village, 979 residents, has had a car factory as well.
