Monteroduni

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 2,267 · Postal code: 86075

In the Pignatelli castle there is an eighteenth-century hall whose ceiling is made of a hundred and ninety painted oak panels. At the entrance to the garden, walled in place in 1890, stands a slab of 1752 listing the tolls people paid to cross the Lorda.

The town's name comes from Olotronus, as the Volturno was called in ancient times. The castle began as a Lombard fort; in 1193 the soldiers of Bertold of Kunsberg attacked it, and the Pignatelli held it until 1806, later handing it to the comune. Water came late here: until the eighteenth century people drank from rainwater cisterns, the aqueduct dates from 1934 and electric light from 1938. There are 2,267 residents.
