Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua
📅 Every year, on 13 June
On 13 June Roccasicura, a municipality of 559 inhabitants in the province of Isernia, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony of Padua.
The village was once Roccha Siconis, after the Lombard prince Sico of Benevento, then Rocca Cicuta, then Ciconia: the name we use today, safe rock, only appears in the sixteenth century. Safe enough it was not: the castle on the rocky spur withstood the earthquake of 1456, but had already collapsed by 1732, and the quake of 1805 finished the job.
What is left is the San Rocco gate, which led inside the walls, and one castle turret absorbed into the town hall, where the clock now sits. In the church of San Leonardo, founded by the Lombards, the portal is still the twelfth-century one and the Romanesque font is eleventh-century: the 559 residents walk past it every day.
