Salcito

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 695 · Postal code: 86026

In 1820 the parish priest, don Antonio Lalli, bought part of the baronial palace from the Caracciolo for three hundred ducats: he wanted a bigger church there, and the people of Salcito began carrying up the stones one by one. On 14 February 1831 the priest suddenly died and the work stopped where it was: no outer walls, no roof.

People called it the church of the big windows. It stayed that way for nearly two hundred years: it was finished in 2008, and is now dedicated to San Rocco. The village, 695 residents, sits at 678 metres below Monte Lungo, inside the Morge park, and its name comes from the willows that grew among its springs.
