Borgoratto Alessandrino

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 617 · Postal code: 15013

Borgoratto Alessandrino already existed before the thirteenth century, on the bank of the Bormida, and tradition traces its name to families called Ratti, or De' Ratti. The document that counts is dated 28 May 1438: Filippo Maria Visconti, lord of these lands, granted the fiefs of Borgoratto and Gamalero to Simonino Ghilini, his favourite secretary, with their castles, holdings, mills and tolls. The grant cut both fiefs loose from the jurisdiction of Alessandria, where Simonino lived.

The arms still hold that story: the crowned lion comes from the Ghilini blazon, the blue diagonal band is the Bormida.
