Carentino's oldest history came to light by accident: during work on the Alessandria-Nizza Monferrato railway, in the second half of the nineteenth century, stone weapons turned up, a sign of Neolithic settlement. The first written documents date from the second half of the twelfth century, when marquis Alberto d'Incisa, back from Apulia, gave his small marquisate a legal order.
The village still carries the marquisate of Incisa in its arms, whose second half takes up its emblem: nine gold stars on blue. In 1589 the Gonzaga had sold the marquisate to Michele Peretti, nephew of pope Sixtus V, who went on to oppress the inhabitants with violence and exactions. Carentino also stopped existing and came back: in 1928 it was absorbed into the comune of Bergamasco, and regained its autonomy only in 1955.
