On 20 May Castelspina, a municipality of 422 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patron Saint Bernardino of Siena.
Castelspina, Castiè d'la Speina in Piedmontese, grew out of the comune of Castellazzo Bormida; its parish church rises on the foundations of old Santa Maria di Gamondio. The block facing the square, town hall included, rests on the walls of a square castle raised around 1240 by the Malvicini, and stretches of its perimeter still show.
A portico of three arches on stone columns fronts the parish church; above it two arched niches flank a window, and the front closes in a scrolled pediment. To the right, set apart, the plastered bell tower shows its two bells.
