Gamalero

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 847 · Postal code: 15010

The name of Gamalero runs through a chain of uncertain forms, from Scamilaria to Gamelerium; the likeliest explanation points to the idea of a hump, and the ground agrees: the village sits on two close hills. The first firm mention is a diploma of Otto I of Saxony from 967, confirming fiefs in the county of Acqui to Aleramo of Monferrato.

The chronicles say little about Gamalero, and that silence describes a poor place of scattered farmsteads between La Rocca and San Lorenzo. In 1802 the lord sold the castle to two landowning farmers, who took it apart for its stone; on the town arms a castle remains, the one called Castelmerlino.
