Feast of Saint Felix and Saint Agatha
📅 Every year, on 29 July
On 29 July Oviglio, a municipality of 1,319 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patrons Saint Felix and Saint Agatha (san Felice e sant'Agata).
In the second half of the twelfth century Oviglio was one of eight settlements that made the new town of Alessandria, first formed by Gamondio, Marengo and Bergoglio: in the documents of the day it is called Vuilije. The official founding date is 3 May 1168; the city's name honours Pope Alexander III, who had excommunicated Barbarossa.
The castle rises on an older castrum, inside a bastioned wall that enclosed a borgo the Ovigliesi still call the inner one. It is the royal castle because Queen Maria Cristina, widow of Carlo Felice, bought it; the Calcamuggi counts had added the eastern entrance and the tower above it. In 1908 it was declared a national monument.
