Saint Pius V, patron of the land of the great complex of Santa Croce
📅 Every year, on 5 May
Bosco Marengo celebrates Saint Pius V on 5 May.
Marengo is thought to come from the Marici, a Ligurian people who were here before the Romans: the area was Lucus Maricorum, the wood of the Marici, and their name outlasted them by centuries.
In 1447 the men of Bosco fought in the battle between the French and the Milanese, and their loyalty ended up on a plaque set into the walls of the Castello Sforzesco. The village later gave the world Antonio Michele Ghislieri: as Pope Pius V, in 1566 he wanted a Dominican convent on his home ground, meant to be the centre of a new city that would swallow Bosco and Frugarolo, and his own tomb.
