Casal Cermelli

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,235 · Postal code: 15072

The village carries the name of the family that made it: the Cermelli founded it in the Middle Ages, taking a slice of land from Castellazzo Bormida, on the left bank of the Orba. Its least predictable story is the gold panned from the river sands, documented since 1212. A Swiss company, later in Dutch hands, set up a dredge here in 1887; about a year later one of the usual floods swept it away.

Portanova, now a hamlet, was a suburb of Alessandria until 1929; its church of Sant'Antonio da Padova is in bare brick, with a rose window over the doorway and the clock tower alongside.
