Carbonara Scrivia

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,055 · Postal code: 15050

At the centre of the village stands the donjon, all that is left of the castle, dated to the fourteenth century, perhaps the first years of the next. The keep was pulled down and rebuilt more than once; in 1828 an earthquake ruined it, and a few years later the roof fell in for good, leaving only the outer walls.

The Guidobono Cavalchini held it until the nineteen-eighties, then gave it to the comune. The arms repeat the tower: on silver a red keep with open door and windows, and above it a rampant lion crowned in gold. The parish church of San Martino Vescovo, built in 1780, is close by.
