Carrosio

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 481 · Postal code: 15060

Carrosio sits on the left bank of the Lemme, though not where it began: when the old settlement was destroyed, survivors fled uphill and rebuilt it at a place still called Meo, from their Carystum pagus meus, "Carrosio, my village". On the hill's broken cone only the small church of the Ascension survives.

The name Carroxium first appears in a document of 1144. Ceded to Savoy in 1735, it became a Savoyard enclave inside the Republic of Genoa; in 1812 Pope Pius VII, bound for exile at Fontainebleau, stopped in the palazzo that is now the town hall, as a plaque records. The seventeenth-century parish church of the Assumption holds a Madonna of the Maragliano school.

Feast of the Holy Cross

📅 Every year, on 14 September

On 14 September Carrosio celebrates the Holy Cross; the village also remembers 2 September 1815, when King Victor Emmanuel I and Queen Maria Teresa of Austria-Este passed through, greeted with great celebration by the people.
