Arquata Scrivia

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,068 · Postal code: 15061

The name comes from the Latin arcuata, made in arches: the arches are those of the aqueduct that carried water to Libarna. Other explanations have been put forward and set aside — the one deriving it from arcus aquae is held to be unreliable, and the one drawing it from dialect does not stand, since the name appears in documents centuries before the dialects took shape.

In 1313 Arquata became an imperial fief of the Spinola, with its own government, court, laws and even a mint. In 1796, after some peasants had ambushed French soldiers, Napoleon ordered it sacked and burned. In the Great War it was the base of the British troops, and in 1921 the British War Cemetery was laid out beside the village cemetery.
