Mornese

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 726 · Postal code: 15075

Mornese lies on the last hills of the Alto Monferrato, where Piedmont becomes the Ligurian Apennines. A document of 1188 calls it Molonesio, a fief of the Genoese Rosso della Volta, who built a castle here in 1270. The arms keep that story: the shield of Monferrato, the Cistercian emblem, whose order tradition credits with the founding, and a star lighting a castle.

The parish church, begun in 1590 as San Nicola da Tolentino, later passed to San Silvestro. The front carries statues in niches, the tower a clock. Maria Domenica Mazzarello, born in the hamlet of Mazzarelli, founded the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians with Don Bosco.
