Voltaggio

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 759 · Postal code: 15060

Voltaggio lies in the Ligurian Apennines and has always looked to Genoa: the Republic held here the stretch of the old via Postumia that crossed the Apennine passes while avoiding the imperial fiefs. In 1859 the Rattazzi law moved it from the Ligurian province of Novi to Alessandria; in 2005, at its council's request, Genoa named it an honorary comune of its province, the only Piedmontese one.

A stone Romanesque bridge still crosses the Lemme, the village houses climbing behind it. The Capuchin friary outside the village keeps a gallery of Genoese and Lombard paintings, among them canvases by Sinibaldo Scorza, a painter from here; on the hill above stand the ruins of the castle.
