Feast of Saint Martin
📅 Every year, on 11 November
On 11 November Montaldeo celebrates its patron Saint Martin, to whom the parish church is dedicated; the town also preserves the Castello Doria.
Montaldeo stands on the last slopes of the Ligurian Apennines, near Ovada, and appears as Mons Alpeo in tenth-century documents granting it to the abbey of San Marziano in Tortona. It later belonged to the marquises of Gavi; destroyed by the Genoese in 1224, it was rebuilt in 1271 by the commune of Alessandria and passed to the marquisate of Monferrato. Under the Sforza it fell to Milan and was granted in fief to the Trotti.
In 1528 the villagers, worn down by their lord Cristoforo Trotti's abuses, rose up, and the revolt ended with the massacre of his whole family; in 1531 the fief went to the Doria, whose eldest son still bears the title of marquis of Montaldeo. The castle above the village is an almost cubic block of two floors with a wall-walk; a cobbled ramp leads to the rectangular courtyard, and inside are a hall of coats of arms and a courtroom.
