Stazzano

The name may come from the gens Statia or from statio, a stopping place: Roman Libarna was not far off. In 1155 the soldiers of Frederick Barbarossa sacked the village and burned the castle, and the people fled up the mountain above it.

Up there, so the story goes, they called on the Virgin and were spared; a chapel recorded the deliverance, then it was forgotten. In 1620, fleeing French troops, a deaf-mute girl saw a dove settle on a hawthorn bush: the plant flowered out of season and she got her speech back. The sanctuary was begun in 1633, its high altar on the spot of the hawthorn, and the mountain has been Spineto ever since.
