Serravalle Scrivia

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,322 · Postal code: 15069

Serravalle stands where the Borbera runs into the Scrivia, at the last spurs of the Ligurian Apennine and the start of the plain. The fortified village was perhaps built by the people of Libarna, the Roman town on the via Postumia between Genoa and Tortona, after that town was swept away in 452 by the collapse of the empire and the invasions.

The name appears for the first time in a deed of 1140 and explains itself: the first core closed the gorge of the Scrivia and Crenna valleys, Serra Vallis. Of Libarna the archaeological area remains, two kilometres from the village, and the two Doric columns of the doorway of the Oratorio dei Rossi come from there.
