Ricaldone

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 675 · Postal code: 15010

The name joins runcus, scrubland, to the patronymic Aldo: Ricaldone is the scrubland of Aldo, the Lombard chief who took these lands in the seventh century. The community always ran on its own Statutes, while feudal lords bought rights and resold them to the highest bidder; in 1199 Alessandria destroyed the village, and in 1774 it won its independence.

The parish church of Saints Simon and Jude replaced the old church of San Michele, which still stands at the village entrance; the Statutes of 1493 already name a church with that dedication. The old nursery school houses the documentation centre devoted to Luigi Tenco, and the singer is buried in the cemetery.
