Quaranti

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 184 · Postal code: 14040

The first certain record of the village is a clause in the statutes of Mombaruzzo of 1337, ordering the men of Quaranti to elect a campario, a field guard to watch over all their vineyards. Autonomy came later: in 1493 the common wood called la Comuna was split in half, Mombaruzzo on one side, Fontanile, Castelletto Molina and Quaranti on the other.

The coat of arms says those same two things. A silver tower with Ghibelline merlons recalls the old stronghold the village grew around, and above it runs a golden vine branch with three bunches: more than half the municipal land is still under vines. Outside the built-up area, on the road to Acqui Terme, stands the small Romanesque brick church of Santi Cosma e Damiano, compact but opened up by a large porch, looking over the hills; it was enlarged in the early seventeenth century. The parish church is dedicated to San Lorenzo.
