Cerrina Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,495 · Postal code: 15020

The name Cerrina may come from a Lombard word for ground thick with turkey oaks, an uncertain guess. The comune is a sum of villages: until 1928 Montalero and Rosingo were separate councils, and Montalero had its own arms, a crowned black eagle on gold with a red cross.

Montalero castle began as a fortified house over the Valle Cerrina, at a site once Mons Laurus, then Montalerius: a diploma of 1070 names it already, and in 1388 the lords invested with it took their surname from it. On the square at Cerrina, between the parish church of Saints Nazarius and Celsus and the town hall, stands a heavy fortified house, its pointed windows framed in terracotta.
