Gabiano

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,212 · Postal code: 15020

Gabiano sits on the south flank of a 300-metre hill in the Basso Monferrato, under the castle of the Cattaneo Adorno Giustiniani. At its foot stands the old pieve of San Pietro, medieval and later reworked, with its Romanesque bell tower. The upper village, the Rollino, keeps a ricetto's plan, old houses packed round the church of San Defendente.

The crowned golden lion in the town's arms comes from the blazon of the nobles of Gabiano, who held the fief until 1421. Two wines carry names from this ground, the Gabiano and the Rubino di Cantavenna, both from Barbera grapes. Varengo, on the far slope, was once its own comune.
