Villamiroglio

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 332 · Postal code: 15020

Villamiroglio was once called Villa Santa Maria and later took the name of the Miroglio, counts of Moncestino, who held it in fief: the municipal arms are still that family's blazon. The earlier parish church was dedicated to Santa Maria, and on its site the church of Santi Filippo e Michele was begun in 1764. The village never gathered around a single centre: the houses lie in several clusters, known here as cantoni. The territory belonged to the diocese of Vercelli until Casale was made a diocese and took it over.

The church of Santa Liberata, of the late fifteenth century, is among the oldest places of worship in the Valcerrina and keeps seventeenth-century frescoes. At Vallegioliti the inhabitants obtained a church of their own, Santo Stefano, consecrated in 1823 by the bishop of Casale so they need not go to the main village for services; another church, dedicated to San Filippo, stands in the hamlet of Mezzalfenga. All the road signs in the comune are bilingual, Italian and Piedmontese.
