Odalengo Piccolo

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 270 · Postal code: 15020

Odalengo Piccolo lies in the Val Cerrina, in the Monferrato, and has no single centre: the town hall stands at Serra, the parish church at Vicinato, then Palmaro, Dorato and Pessine, scattered over the hills south of the Stura del Monferrato, where woodland alternates with vineyards. The name enters the records in the late thirteenth century as Odalengum ultra Sturiam, Odalengo beyond the Stura; the form that separates it from nearby Odalengo Grande, Odalengum minus, is recorded in 1306.

The municipal arms come from here: the Agnus Dei is copied from a carved slab dated 1386 on the inner front of the castle of Pessine, while the lily on blue is taken from the arms of the Gozzani, counts of Odalengo. At Bricco the commune runs its own astronomical observatory.
