Mombello Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,087 · Postal code: 15020

The sanctuary of San Gottardo stands on the road between the hamlets of Gaminella and Pozzengo, and two stories still told there explain its origin: the bishop of Hildesheim appearing to snatch a child from a pair of bolting oxen, and the wayfarer who leaned on the portico wall, leaving the saint's figure printed there, around which the first shrine grew.

The chapel enters a document in 1692, when prior Lodovico Mombellardo asked the bishop of Casale to make it a country church; the four-column pronaos with its tympanum is late nineteenth century. In the village itself, the church square turns up in Cesare Pavese's Il diavolo sulle colline.
