Feast of Saint Lucy
📅 Every year, on 13 December
On 13 December Conzano celebrates its patroness Saint Lucy, to whom the town's church is dedicated, in the Monferrato area near Casale.
The name comes from a Roman landowner, one Condius or Contius who held the land in the third century. The first village lay lower down and vanished in the early medieval raids; the next grew on the hill in concentric rings. On the eastern slope stands the old tower, later the clock tower, and before it the small church of San Biagio, deconsecrated and now used for concerts.
Phylloxera struck the vines late in the nineteenth century and people left to cut sugarcane in north Queensland, work not far from tending a vineyard. A census of those years counted 6500 Italians, one in fifty from Conzano; the old parade ground is now Piazza Australia.
