Camagna Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 510 · Postal code: 15030

The name probably comes from the Latin castrum magnum, a large camp or stronghold, and the coat of arms answers with a battlemented castle on green ground. At the top of the village, ringed by the old via Rocca, lie the remains of the Monferrato marquesses' castle, raised perhaps where a Lombard one stood and almost entirely rebuilt in the late eighteenth century; it is now a private house.

Above the roofs stands the parish church of Sant'Eusebio: Crescentino Caselli rebuilt it between 1885 and 1890, keeping the facade of the earlier church. Its columned drum, the balustrade statues and the lantern rise beside the bell tower and its clock.
